Bald Cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) are native to Southeastern region of this land, including here in Bvlbancha (New Orleans). Did you know these ancient trees are related to redwoods?
Indigenous people have long used their cones, seeds, leaves, and bark for medicinal purposes. The leaves and seeds have been used to treat malaria and liver diseases. Various parts of the tree have been used to prepare ointments or infusions for heart disease, hemorrhoids, gout, ulcers, bronchitis, diarrhea, infections, bladder issues, respiratory conditions, and skin conditions. They can be supportive for various types of inflammatory conditions. The way that they work in our human bodies relates to how they grow- they prefer to have their “feet” in the water, which can be a clue that they help regulate water in the body.
Extracts of Bald Cypress can be used for their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In modern herbal practice, the needles are appreciated as a cooling, drying herb that supports healthy fluid movement throughout the body.
